Some of the drawbacks of classes at the local club:
- Large class sizes don't allow for much interaction with
the instructor.
- Incomplete examples that only show one or two of the
hands.
- Limited practice: you aren't given many chances to apply
what you've learned.
- Lack of depth: many courses only scratch the surface of a
topic, and don't talk about what comes next or address potential problems.
If you decide to play with a bridge professional instead, you're
at the mercy of the cards. You may end up defending all day when you hoped to work on
declarer play, or never have enough points to
bid past the 3-level when you wanted to work on slam bidding.
Playing with a bridge pro can be a great way to learn, but it's often
ineffective if you want to target a particular area.
My online lessons, all taught on BridgeBaseOnline, offer some tremendous advantages over conventional
teaching methods:
- Practical experience. Each class includes many example
hands (some classes use more than 20!) to give you real experience
instead of just abstract information.
- Hands-on learning. I use a variety of interactive
exercises to make you an active participant in the learning
process and keep you engaged.
- Constant involvement. Each student participates fully in
each hand... no waiting for your turn!
- Comfortable pace. I access materials with a few clicks of
the mouse, so there is virtually none of the down-time associated
with live classes (writing an example on a chalkboard, dealing out
another lesson hand, etc). This in turn means that I can cover
topics in more depth than is possible in a conventional lesson.
- Privacy. Do you ever feel uncomfortable participating
when you aren't sure you have the right answer, or nervous about
asking questions that might seem 'silly'? In person this can be a
genuine concern, but there's no need to worry online. BBO's chat
features allow you speak with me one-on-one at any time; you
can ask questions and participate in exercises in complete privacy.
